Rory Parle in Easy Steps

My name is Rory Parle. I write Soylent Red all by myself.

As of April 2nd 2007, I'm a software engineer at Google. I work in the Google EU headquarters in Dublin. Needless to say that what I write on this site doesn't represent the views of my employer. This is mostly because my employer doesn't have any views about most of what I write about, nor should it.

Before I worked for Google I studied in University College Dublin for six years. My primary degree is in theoretical physics. I went on to do a higher diploma in computer science, followed by a research masters in machine learning. The title of my masters thesis was Understanding User Activities in Free Text Email. It was all about getting computers to figure out what you're doing without you having to tell them, which I think is something computers should do more of.

I grew up in Greystones. In the summer of 2007 I moved out to Ringsend. I now live about 200m from my office, which is slightly farther than most of the people I work with. I guess that makes me an outsider.

I'm a member of the Karma Army, a.k.a. Join Me. It's not a cult; it's a collective. Ostensibly the point is to do random nice things for strangers every Friday, but it turns out to mostly be about meeting bunch of cool and slightly random people and having a good time.

I'm not religious, except with respect to the works of Joss Whedon.
