Winning the Bet

Posted in , and on Sun, 09th Sep 2007 at 10:51

Thanks to everyone who helped out by linking to the picture of Heather McNeil. I won the bet, saving myself from what I'm told was going to be a dreadful forfeit. No-one has yet told me what the forfeit was, but the word waxing was mentioned in passing.

I got a picture of Heather as the sixth Google Image Search result for "Heather McNeil"

Glad to help. Interestingly (in an uninteresting sort of way), I'm in the top 20 image results for Johann Hari, sporting an unimpressive black eye.

Heather McNeil: Update

Posted in and on Wed, 13th Jun 2007 at 11:31

I've made change to the Heather McNeil bet. If you've helped me so far, or still want to help me, please have a look at the update at the top of that post. I've moved the picture, so you may need to update your own blog post.

This is the last change, I promise.

Thanks.

2 soylent red images on the 2nd page of results. Probably not the two you want though… http://www.google.com/images?q=%22heather+mcneil%22&svnum=10&hl=en&start=18&sa=N&ndsp=18

Heather McNeil: The Bet

Posted in and on Fri, 08th Jun 2007 at 15:00

Important update!—I'm not so keen on having the picture I'm using hosted by Flickr. In fact I don't even know if Flickr photos show up in GIS results. So I've switched to a copy of the picture hosted on Soylent Red. If you've helped with the campaign so far I'd really appreciate it if you could update your sites to point at the new image. Links to this post and to the blog are still fine.

And so it came to pass that Heather McNeil bet me that I couldn't get a picture of her to show up in the top 10 results for a Google Image Search for "Heather McNeil". I have until the weekend of 8th/9th September to make this happen. If I fail, I face a forfeit. According to Rachel, who had a hand in deciding the forfeit, I really should try to win.

Step 1: I have found the image I want to promote:
Heather McNeil
(Heather McNeil at K4)

It's from K4, and I chose it because it was the first one I found. I wanted to crack on with the game* rather than faffing about trying to find a really embarrassing one. I also think that going a little easy on the embarrassing front could be a good idea if it turns out that I lose the bet.

Step 2: Google likes your search terms to appear in the address. http://heathermcneil.blogspot.com/, the blog I set up today solely for the purpose of winning this bet, should help in that regard.

Step 3: This site has a pretty high Page Rank for many pages, so a mention or two on here should be a big win for me.

Step 4: Your help! Please post the picture wherever you can, or link to it wherever you can. Don't copy the picture; that's no use. Just use the address "http://www.soylentred.net/images/heather-mcneil.jpg". Be sure to put Heather's full name (Heather McNeil) prominently close to the picture. Alt and title text is ideal, if you know what those are.

It's also useful if you can link to this post or to the blog wherever you can.

Step 5: There is no step 5.

Step 6: Victory!

* (I just lost, by the way. The other game I mean.)

Probably a stupid question, but have you pointed google towards it yet? It's not showing up anywhere in the image results. Maybe it hasn't been crawled yet …

Actually, maybe I can help out. As soon it starts showing up in google, I can add it to the sidebar of my blog, so it should show up on about 120 pages.

Blogger blogs are automatically added to the Googlebot's list, to my understanding. It'll be found next time it crawls here anyway. I only set it all up today so it'll be a few days.

Feel free to link the image ASAP though. It doesn't need to be indexed before you do that. Cheers. :)

Yes, I know I can add it now. I'm just not sure I want to be tied to a project if it's doomed to failure!

This is a plea to all who Rory is trying to rope into this project.

PLEASE DO NOT HELP HIM!!!!

The forfeit is entirely too good to be wasted!! I'm a nice person I don't deserve this abuse!!

Rory I hate you!!!!!

Joe and Stephen: We're forging ahead in incredible time. This bet should be won in time for breakfast. Be on the winning team.

Heather: You made the bet, you can't un-make it. Bear in mind that I'm the only person who stands to lose from this bet.

It's dropped to number 20 on the web search! What's going on?

I say log in to the blog and add a few new posts. That should pull it up in the ranks.

I don't see a drop. Do you have personalised search enabled? Or did you leave out the quotes?

by Rory
Tue, 12th Jun 2007 (12:41)

Nope, no personalized search enabled. Oddly it was coming up at 18 for google.ie, 19 for google.co.uk and 20 for google.com. Quotes are in. Here is my search query:

Ok, you're currently at position 21 in the image search (the soylentred page, not the blogspot one). It's the last slot on the first page.

Actually I'm wrong, that's a pic of the add comment button for your blog!

I have created a page to help. Google should hit it soon. I was going to link it here to help as well but your blog engine won't let me. here's the url anyway: heather-mcneil.nutty.tk/heather-mcneil.html

Thanks Charlie. It's much appreciated. Keep 'em coming folks.

True. That's why I switched away from the Flickr picture to one hosted on Soylent Red.

Hi Rory,

The current status isn't looking good for you. Google has clearly indexed your site, and is picking up all the comments, but isn't indexing that image. Any idea what's you?

I suppose it's possible that the image search does something with the image metadata, so perhaps you want to use 'convert' on it.

Now number one image result! http://images.google.com/images?q=heather+mcneil

Dunno if you made it in time for the bet.
