That Was Close

It seems there was an avalanche in Sölden yesterday. That's the town where I was skiing/getting horribly sunburned on Thursday:

An avalanche buried an Austrian ski resort’s street under more than 12 feet of snow today.

Police, caught by surprise, were searching to see if anyone was trapped in the 100-yard stretch just outside the town of Soelden in the western Alpine province of Tyrol.

Mayor Ernst Schoepf said up to 13 feet of snow covered parts of the Venterstrasse – a key local roadway leading in and out of the area.

Ok, not so much of a "lucky escape" given that I was only there for less than two days and the avalanche happened three days later, but it's notable at least.

Web Logging 10 Years Old

Posted in , , and on Wed, 19th Dec 2007 at 00:24

The phrase "web log" has been around for 10 years according to the BBC, who marked it's 10th anniversary on December 17. I think it's about time we came up for new word for what we do here. "Clogging the tubes" has the right feel. So to speak.

Terrifyingly, Soylent Red is coming up on its 5th birthday in less than a month. I've posted on average a little over once every three days throughout that time.

Breaking News: Pope Still a Bigot

Posted in , , and on Mon, 26th Feb 2007 at 23:47

I think it's quite kind of the Pope to raise his ugly head every now and again to remind us all how mindlessly perverse his ideas are. This time he "attacked" artificial insemination, of all things. Of course if God insists that someone shouldn't be allowed to reproduce then that's his prerogative as king of the faeries and who are we to argue? Oh yes, that's right. We're intelligent, reasonable, compassionate human beings, ethically compelled to assist those in need. At least some of us are.

His Popeness also reiterated his "gays are icky" stance, as I imagine he does at every available opportunity. Once again this failed to make a billion or so people ashamed to call themselves Catholics, for reasons best known to themselves, though possibly involving finger-in-ear-la-la-la syndrome.

In other news, our Tea-suck or however you spell it Bertie has condemned the "aggressive secularism" that is growing in Ireland because, it is in the best republican traditions to support the religious elements. He even called "secular types" illiberal. If that isnt the pot calling the kettle a nubian I dont know what is.

What an odd statement. Secularism can't really be aggressive. I wonder was he reacting to forthright rationalism? Unfortunately the RTÉ News online story (http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/0226/religion.html) doesn't say anything about that statement beyond, "Mr Ahern said it would be a betrayal of the best traditions of Irish republicanism if an aggressive secularism had its way."

I was amused by this remark: "Mr Ahern complimented the way Christianity was still indelibly shaping Ireland". I wonder if he went on to compliment cancer's indelible shaping of a sufferer's body.
