In Which I Ask You to Ignore Me

Posted in on Tue, 20th Feb 2007 at 22:51

Seriously. Ignore this post. I'm only testing things.

For the nerds: I'm making sure my fixes to some character encoding issues work as well on the live site as they do in testing. The two setups are close enough to identical for me to reasonably assume that anything that works locally will work on the live site, but encoding problems in PHP and MySQL are probably the area least likely to Just Work. Hence the test.

The plus, from your standpoint, is that my Atom feed will be much less brittle than it used to be. It used to break quite easily whenever I was incautious in pasting quotes from other sites. The usual was when someone used fancy quote characters (“” instead of ""). Then boom. At best this resulted in some garbling when you read the post. At worst it stopped it from showing up in Firefox's live bookmarks.

Now that I've gone and put those fancy quotes in this post, I guess I'll find out pretty quickly if they're still liable to break things.

Unfortunately I ignored your request to ignore you and wasted 1 minute of my life reading something which I didn't really understand - even though I should with my qualifications. You have just inadvertantly made me feel slightly worse about myself but I forgive you because I like the cut of your jib. Whats a jib? Ha ha, promote that man.

I've just turned off commenting on 490 archived posts dating from January 2003 to May 2006. I didn't want to do this because I think that people should have the opportunity to give their opinion on something even if they only stumble onto it from a random search years after it was written.

But the simple fact is that people don't give their opinions on things that they stumble onto from searches, unless their opinion is that their scummy employer has better car rental services than his competitors. This month five sixths of the comments left on this site were spam. That's fifty-four spam comments to eleven real ones so far this month.

Show the spammers who's boss. Tip the balance in our favour. Leave real comments.

Random

Maybe you think the content of Soylent Red is random enough as it is. But if you could do with even more randomness, try visiting a random post. That URL will automatically redirect you to one of the site's (as of this writing) 489 posts. I'm not really sure what to do with this yet. I just figured you might want to play with it.
